November Goals: Here's How I Did this Month

Here's how I did this month...

(1) Do something meditational/yoga-ish for 20 minutes a day... I was great at the introspection and meditational stuff, but not so much with the yoga. Maybe January?

(2) Develop a strategy for the remainder of the year... Did it and have pre-written all of my blog posts so I can do more of that introspection and planning for the new year.

(3) Choose a "home improvement" goal for the month... Love the flannel! :)

How did you do?

NOTE: I will be taking the month of December off from 3 in 30. And this blog will change, too, as I will post only twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

I'm going to sink deep into the joy of the season and get back to goals and posting more often in January. See you then!

And have a wonderful holiday season!

Almost Wordless Wednesday: Curvy Girl Inspiration in Cool Colors

Add some bling in a cool red, or glittery black and this could go to a Christmas party, don't you think?

Spicy Heat: Seasonal Color Analysis with a Featured Blogger

Seasonal Color Analysis: Another Beautiful Deep Autumn...

What a pleasure it was to be able to work with Tami, of Talking with Tami, to do her virtual color analysis and discover her beautiful warm coloring! Though it doesn't show up as clearly in this professional picture, Tami’s coloring is warm and rich and deep but slightly muted, which makes her a deep autumn. And in Color Alliance, she is a vivid rich autumn.

And as you know, she’s in good company! The president and Mrs. Obama are both deep autumns, and more specifically, vivid rich autumns, as well.

Vivid Rich Autumn Color Palette

Here is one example of a vivid rich autumn color palette. Though each one is personalized for the coloring of the person ordering it, they are similar in that they would all match someone whose coloring is warm, deep, rich and slightly muted.

Can She Wear Black?...

Yes, she can wear black! Deep autumns can wear black, but it is better in small doses

Wear it in small blocks of color, mixed with a lot of heat. Deep autumn is red-hot and offers lots of spicy colors to choose from, so deep autumns should include them whenever they succumb to the temptation to wear black as part of a deep autumn ensemble.

Spicy Heat?...

Yes, indeed! Deep autumn is full of fiery passionate heat. All of the reds and the oranges work, as do other burnished colors like deep olive, reddened browns, burnt oranges, dark cognac, bronzed burgundy. What do I mean? Moroccan colors. Russets, bricks and bittersweets. Bollywood heat.

Deep Autumn

"...it’s the tribal-as-in-undomesticated goddess, the wild horse. The untethered freedom. Your own hoofbeats pounding in your ears. The driving intention. The uncaring about reactions.  Can we go back and emphasize the word wild. Native. Savage. Unchecked. Untamed. All it takes is one scarf, one bronzed lipstick, one leopard print-backed glove, and the viewer just felt it in their chest (but couldn’t say exactly what they felt)."~~Christine Scaman

I love the intensity with which Christine, a color analyst at 12Blueprints.com, writes about the seasons and brings them to life. I am a deep autumn, too, and I feel that intensity myself, as a person and in the deep autumn color palette.

Deep Autumn Makeup...

Create contrast. Define the eyebrows, create some interest with the eyeshadow, and don't forget lipstick, so that your mouth shows up as part of your face. Deep autumns often want a more natural look (guilty) but probably need more drama than they are initially comfortable with in their makeup.

All of the makeup needs to have that burnished quality that represents the deep autumn coloring. Very dark brown eyeliner, dark brown mascara, rich warm brown eyeshadow, red or red-orange or orange-brown on the cheeks and lips.

Deep autumn is practical and down-to-earth. Sometimes all that burnished color and spicy heat can take some getting used to in someone who has worn other colors, instead. It's not for the faint of heart.

But I know Tami is ready to bring it. For the rest of us, here's some encouragement, whatever your season.

"Rise up to being who you are. In the beginning, right colour can feel like a disguise. In no time, the colours will have convinced you of your truth when nobody else could."~~Christine Scaman

I am planning to link up today to Glamamom for this week's Monday Mingle and to Not Dead Yet Style for Visible Monday. On Wednesday, I will link up with Lindsey at The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday and Melaina at Transatlantic Blonde for What I Wore Wednesday.

NOTE: I will be taking the month of December off from the weekly linkups and from doing virtual color analysis, but will be back in January. I'll still be posting here a couple of times a week, though, so drop by and say hello.

For those I might not see in linkup land, have a wonderful holiday season!!

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday: What I Would Wear for Thanksgiving

This is what I would wear if I were going to someone else's house tomorrow...

Or, maybe this...

Since I am staying at home with the kid, I am likely to be in loungewear (it will be brown, though, and I have orange socks ~ does that count?)

November Goals: In Which There Was No Yoga

Here's how I did this week...

(1) Do something meditational/yoga-ish for 15-20 minutes a day...

Yes, to 15-20 minutes of meditation, but once again, no yoga. Ah, well! Maybe next week.

(2) Develop a strategy for the remainder of the year...

I have a blog plan in place & I am working on the overall business plan, too, but that is what a lot of the "meditation" has been about these past week. Some things are shifting and I am seeking intuitive guidance about what going forward will look like for my business.

(3) Choose a "home improvement" goal for the month...

I ordered flannel sheets! :)

How was your week?

Wear Yourself, Zyla Style: Some Examples

On my TV, her coloring looked both deeper and richer than this, so I tried to alter it to make it match what I saw and it's still not quite right. But can you see how the jacket is a match for her hair color?

There are even highlights in both!

Here I am trying to match hair, eyes or both...

Many of us who are women of color have hair color in the espresso, brown-black, chestnut brown range. Here are some outfit ideas that Rachel Maddow can use, as well (I added the sunglasses just for her), for supporting our hair color in what we wear...

Espresso Outfit Ideas

I have gotten very specific with the David Zyla book, but what you are basically doing is wearing the colors you find in your eyes, hair, and skin. Dark brown is my favorite, but I also love what happens when I wear rust, which is more of a skin undertone color.

Do you try to wear colors that match your hair or eyes or skin?

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday: What I Want to Wear, Anywhere

Fashion Feng Shui: Earth and Fire

In all likelihood, I won't be going out to lunch or to see a movie anytime soon but maybe this suggestion will run in the background and eventually, I'll do one or the other. :)

Where have you been wearing your pretty outfits?

Wear Yourself, Zyla Style: Casual Capsule

Casual Capsule...

(1) One cardi and pants outfit in your formal color, your version of black.

“You can use this color to blend into the group, but you can also use it to provide a high-contrast backdrop to one of the other colors in your palette.” ~David Zyla, The Color of Style

(2) One cardigan and one pair of pants in your version of brown.

Great color to wear for a more relaxed day. No important client meetings, no need to impress. In fact, your version of brown helps you communicate support.

(3) One top and/or pair of pants in your version of khaki.

This color can provide a great backdrop for your accent colors and is great for casual outings or get-togethers. A bold scarf or statement piece of jewelry are perfect in combination with this neutral.
You also can add in a more intense energy color (the deepest color in your eyes).

(4) Accent pieces in one or two of the five true colors.

These pieces can be tops, cardis, accessories, etc. Your version of red might be one of these accent colors.

And my belief is that we can use a range of colors that are similar to the colors we have identified, so we can create a range of colors to choose from that support us in this way.

For my own Zyla colors, I created a Pinterest board and for each one, I chose a range of possible colors. Check it out if you want to see examples of what I’m talking about here. This pic is a collage of my energy colors.

What I like about Zyla’s recommendations is that he makes the point that you can create a capsule wardrobe with only 8-10 pieces and still create a variety of outfits that allow for creative self-expression. And each of these colors can be found in your actual coloring.

If you haven’t read the book, I highly recommend it!

When I first read the book, my concern was that the combinations he suggested might be boring. But when I considered them specifically with my own colors, I realized the potential to create some great outfits.

What do you think? Would this basic formula, created around neutrals, work for you?

Autumn Weather, Finally!

Though it still is not as cold as some of you are experiencing in the northern states, it's starting to cool off here. :)

I had several opportunities to add a sweater or wear long sleeves when I was running errands, going to vote last Tuesday, or just walking to check the mail. This is the weather I love, when it's not yet cold enough to turn on the heat, but does get cold enough for sweaters.

How's the weather where you are?

I am linking up today to Momtrends for this week's Monday Mingle and to Not Dead Yet Style for Visible Monday. On Wednesday, I will link up with Lindsey at The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday.

November Goals: the Good, the Bad & the Flannel

Here's how I did this week...

(1) Do something meditational/yoga-ish for 15-20 minutes a day...

I have been doing fairly well with this, although it has been much more meditational than yoga-ish. Hopefully, some actual yoga will happen, too, this month.

(2) Develop a strategy for the remainder of the year...

I am working on this, too, and beginning to think that launching anything in January is going to be too soon. I have blog posts planned, but may hold off on creating new products/programs/etc.

(3) Choose a "home improvement" goal for the month...

I decided that I am going to get flannel sheets and pillowcases. Yay! Comfort. Now, I just have to decide between chocolate and terracotta.

How did you do this week?

Wear Yourself, Zyla Style: Work Capsule

Zyla says you don’t need a dozen outfits, only three basics…

The Basics

Work Capsule

Zyla Work Capsule

(1) One authoritative suit or dress in your version of black.

This color, for you, is the color of the ring around your iris. My black is a deep olive green. Yours might be a midnight blue, a charcoal, an espresso brown or another gorgeous color. This becomes your formal color, great for presentations or important meetings.

(2) A dress in your version of brown.

This color comes from the deepest color in your hair. You can find it by looking at the underside, and Zyla suggests using a magnifying mirror to discover colors you have no idea are there. My brown is a bittersweet chocolate or chestnut brown. What would yours be?

This dress is more relaxed and is good for demonstrating support or teamwork, and might be a good choice when there’s no important meeting w/ the boss.

(3) A blouse and/or skirt in your khaki as backdrop for a scarf in your dramatic color (the color of your veins) or another accent color.

For me, one of my khaki colors is khaki, or camel. The way to find your khaki is to find the lightest color in your hair, which, found in natural lighting with a magnifying glass, might surprise you!

(4) Accent colors in one of your five “true” colors.

Speaking of accent colors, these provide the “drama” referred to in the quote above. The true colors are found by looking at the palm of your hand, the deepest and lightest colors in your eyes, the “pinch” or flush color (pinching your finger), and the color of your veins.

Tomorrow, we'll try the same formula for a more casual mom or mom blogger wardrobe…
