September Goals: How Did You Do this Month?

(1) Read Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui : and choose at least one area to clear this month.

I did it!! And I was so happy with the results, I think I will continue this goal for next month. Maybe until the end of the year?

(2) Start with Ten Challenge: Choose ten items for my early-fall, transitional capsule wardrobe this month and live in them.

I did this one, too! What I liked about it is that I didn't insist that the ten items stay the same, so if I wore something and then, realized I didn't love it or don't love it anymore, I took it out and replaced it. So the ten I have ended up with is really good.

(3) Read Archetypes of the Enneagram: Exploring the Life Themes of the 27 Enneagram Subtypes from the Perspective of Soul. Or, at least read the chapter about my own type.

I completed this one, too! I love exploring the Enneagram and my type (type Nine).

How did your month go? Were you able to get it all done?

Back to Homeschool: An Experiment in Letting Go

Y'all know I take my clothes seriously, right?

And I form relationships with them. So we experience loss in many forms, whether it's a favorite aunt or a favorite sweater. And this post is about the latter, I'm afraid. :)

I'm reminded of an old Andy Griffith episode where they were trying to convince Otis that he had died. They were singing, "we shall meet and we shall miss him..." LOL! But that's what it feels like sometimes when I have to let something go. Do you grieve when you lose a favorite piece of clothing?

In my never-ending quest to discover exactly what works and what doesn't, what loves me even more than I love it, I began to realize that my beloved green duster (yes, you know it well) was falling out of love with me.

We tried to make things work. And you know, we might get together for lunch every now and then, provided I bring my shoulder pads and my animal print scarf and create a bit of eye-catching, sleight-of-hand contrast. But basically, we know it in our hearts. It's over. Goodbye, green duster!!!

First, I tried it without the shoulder pads and without the scarf. Oh boy!! Then I added both and tried again.

I tried it with a monochromatic look. Not enough contrast, and way too muted. I tried it with the khaki pants and kinda got away with it, but still could tell it wasn't my best look. I ended up taking it off and heading to the store in just my shirt and the scarf.

I am now taking applications for a new beloved duster. Needed: a certain something, a beautiful color, substance and structure, and all at a fabulous price (because I ain't loaded). Meanwhile...

"I will remember you..." ;)

Is there anything you need to let go of as we head more deeply into cooler fall weather? What do you have in your closet that probably shouldn't make the cut?

Back to Homeschool: Fall Fashion Week in Paris

In this "back to homeschool" style post, we take a look at some of the great pics from Marie Claire's coverage of Fall Fashion Week in Paris. The article by Ava Feuer presents a slideshow with over 200 pics and I looked at almost all of them!

What I chose to show here are the ones that appealed to me...

Are all the outfits wearable by homeschool moms like me? Definitely not! But they all inspired me in some way. Some I chose for color alone, or for their color combinations. One choice was just to remind me that I miss wearing brown and black together and to nudge me a little to decide what to do about it.

I also loved the comfy layers in a lot of the outfits! I like the idea that that might be a popular style choice this season.

Which ones did you like? If you visit the actual article, and find any good ones I missed, let me know!

Light Autumn & Light Spring, plus a Light Autumn Birthday

Are you a light autumn or a light spring?

If your coloring falls into the light category, then that means that your coloring is light for your ethnicity, and your best color palette is going to have colors that have been tinted with white and are low to medium range in intensity and contrast.

Light Autumn

If you are a light autumn, then your coloring is too warm and deep for spring but lighter than the other autumn seasons. Here is my mother's light carmine autumn color palette...

Notice that her color palette has similar light colors but is warmer than the light spring color palettes.

Light Spring

If you are a light spring, then your colors need to have clarity, but need to be lighter than the other spring seasons' palettes.

Here is a light animated spring palette...

And here is a light opalline spring palette...

Light Autumn Birthday Celebration...

My mother's birthday was last week and my son and I surprised her by celebrating it early. She thought we were just going out to lunch, but didn't know there would be presents and such! We had a great time!!

I am linking up today to Jill at Glamamom for this week's Monday Mingle and to Not Dead, Yet Style for Visible Monday. On Tuesday, it's time for another link up with Real Girl Glam for Real Girl Style. On Wednesday, I will link up with Lindsey at The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday, and to Melaina at Transatlantic Blonde for What I Wore Wednesday.

So what do you think? Are you a light autumn or a light spring?

September Goals: A Birthday Edition (for My Mom)

Today is my mom's birthday!! She has been great to buy for lately because I know her season and can get her fun new things that are perfect for her coloring.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

We celebrated early (last week) and had a wonderful time! Can you tell where we were? More pics in Monday's post...

Here's how I did this week...

(1) Read Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui : and choose at least one area to clear this month. And I'm hoping to clear all my clutter by the end of the year (please, God).

Although this goal is complete, I cleared four more areas this week!

On the other hand, I wanted to do more, but did not have the energy to do all I had planned. There are still five big areas left, and I have to wonder if they will end up being carried over to next month.

(2) Start with Ten Challenge: Choose ten items for my early-fall, transitional capsule wardrobe this month and live in them.

This is great experience, because I already decided I have worn one piece for the last time. I like the substantive feel of it, and its big, round buttons, but that color just is not right for me. Too cool, I think. Say goodbye...

(3) Read Archetypes of the Enneagram: Exploring the Life Themes of the 27 Enneagram Subtypes from the Perspective of Soul. Or, at least read the chapter about my own type.

I read it last week, and this week, even re-read the part about my type. So, done!

How did you do this week?

Back to Homeschool: With Vogue

As I mentioned in another post, I devoured Vogue's Fall fashion issue and I loved its style inspiration. But I often find that they mostly showcase runway looks, so I was glad to find this article online (edited by Chloe Malle) about going back to basics this season...

"While trends are fun to try out, there are those perennially chic pieces in a woman's closet that always do the trick, no matter the occasion. Here, our best dressed of the week stepped out in some of these stylish staples—a string of pearls, a perfectly tailored cocktail dress, a silk white blouse—and made a statement." ~~Chloe Malle, Vogue.com

Of course, most of these women were dressed formally, and I am almost never formal, but I liked seeing these women in more classic styles. You could almost imagine a less dressy version of this suit headed for work, couldn't you?...

By the way, you can go to the website and vote for which of the ten is your personal favorite for "best-dressed." Who would you choose?

Back to Homeschool: Fall Fashion Inspiration from CAbi...

LOVE this style!! :)

The boxy silhouette is popular right now and that's great because it's perfect for my body type (and yours, if you are an apple, like me).

"If you’ve been following the runways and fashion magazines, you know that loose, boxy shapes are the silhouette of the season. From borrowed-from-the-boys blazers, to cozy sweaters, and floaty feminine tops, these pieces have a way of highlighting your feminine features even without hugging your shape. Balance a boxy blazer or sweater with something more fitted on the bottom, like your favorite jegging, legging, or Bree Jean. And we love a boxy top front tucked into an of-the-moment pant like the Fleck Pant or Baby Boot." ~~CAbi Canary

For more fall fashion inspiration, read their post about creating their fall line.

Will you be choosing the boxy style for fall or winter?

The Make It Real Makeover Challenge: Vision Board Style Words

Make It Real Makeover Challenge: My Insights, So Far

"The most important secret: your true style is what you are when you stop trying so hard to be something you are not. You’ll know it when you  start listening to yourself. You’ll discover that you’ve had the answer all along." ~~Valeria Chuba, Cultivating Style

I have been participating in the Make It Real Makeover Challenge for quite a while now, over a month, I believe, and I have really benefited from the approach Valeria Chuba takes. Suspending judgment and just choosing what I am drawn to has helped me see that I actually prefer the fabrics, design lines and textures that are right for me, based on what I have learned from other systems & trainings.

As an image consultant, it makes me wonder if starting with a client's preferences, instead of looking immediately at where they fit, in terms of coloring and body type, isn't the best approach. Because then, hopefully, they will have the pleasure of realizing, that with a little tweaking here & there, what they most want to wear is what they should wear.

Fashion Feng Shui

This is the approach I have learned to take in my Fashion Feng Shui training and I see how it is working in this challenge. In fact, in one of the recent posts on her website, Valeria takes a look at Jenny's vision board and analyzes it according to Fashion Feng Shui principles.

"I find the use of color very interesting here. Jenny opts for blacks and blues. These colors convey depth, calm, intelligence, coolness; in feng shui, these are Water colors – the colors of philosophers, writers, thinkers. Jenny is most definitely all three." ~~Valeria Chuba, Cultivating Style

Valeria goes beyond color, and also observes the shapes, textures, design lines and other features found in Jenny's vision board, taking them as clues to her style. She then makes suggestions about how to make the transition from vision board to reality. She calls Jenny's style Understated Complexity.

Here is Jenny's reaction to Valeria's style makeover & vision board analysis...

"Most of us are stuck with a loop of stories that don’t serve us or actually hold us back, mostly leftovers from our past. We seldom replace them with better stories that actually help us forward. The best thing about Valeria’s vision board analysis for me was the way it told a story about my personality that felt compelling enough to replace the old negative narrative." ~~Jenny Scubi, Cultivating Style

Vision Board Style Analysis

We're at the point now in our style challenge where we attempt an objective look at our vision boards, in a similar style to the way Valeria is doing for people who submitted their vision boards to her.

My Style Word Questions

Here are the questions I will be considering during the next week...

(1) What are the general descriptive words I would use for this vision board?

(2) Which colors do I see & what do they indicate about my style type?

(3) Which patterns do I see with regard to design lines, shapes, etc.?

(4) Which two words would I choose to describe the vision board's style?

(5) Which style categories describe what I am seeing on the vision board?

Are you considering your own style? What are your style words?

Another Look at Vivid Autumn

Last week, we looked at deep spring/contrasting spring. This week, we are taking on clear/bright autumn or in Color Alliance terminology, vivid autumn.

Because I believe that a lot of women of color will be some combination of warm and clear and deep, I think I will be color analyzing a lot of vivid or contrasting springs and vivid or contrasting autumns. This summer, we discovered a famous pair of vivid autumns in the President and Mrs. Obama.

But there's also me, and my cutie-patootie son, who is a vivid rich autumn...

In Color Alliance, Vivid Autumn has a specific definition...

Vivid: Your skin, hair, and eye coloring is mid-value to dark. Your best color combinations are bright and dark colors worn together. Your best single colors are bright.

Autumn: Your coloring is warm, rich, and earthy. Your colors include rich harvest colors and slightly muted colors with golden undertones.

The name that goes in the middle is where your specific coloring comes in, whether your hair is reddish brown or black, your eyes a deep green or topaz, and your skin peachy or golden brown.  For example, the contrasting emeraude autumns whose fans are in my signature box below have green eyes.

As we head into fall, here are great outfit ideas for vivid autumn...

Vivid Rich Autumn, Fall Inspiration

And here I am, wearing a couple of these vivid autumn colors...

By the way, there are always exceptions. As I have mentioned before, my beautiful mother, is not a vivid autumn. She is a light carmine autumn.

I am linking up today to BonBonRoseGirls for this week's Monday Mingle and to Not Dead, Yet Style for Visible Monday. On Tuesday, I will link up with Real Girl Glam. And on Wednesday, I will link up with Lindsey at The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday, and Melaina at Transatlantic Blonde for What I Wore Wednesday.

Have you been wearing any autumn colors this season?
